PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for anyone who privately uses a handgun and or who requires a Competency Certificate in terms of relevant legislation. Persons credited with this unit standard are capable of:
- Handling a handgun.
- Using a handgun.
- Carrying out basic inspection and maintenance of a handgun for safe use.
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are already competent in terms of the following unit standards:
- 117705: Demonstrate knowledge of the Firearms Control Act (Act No. 60 of 2000)
- Communication NQF Level 2.

Our competency training is designed to support your application for a SAPS firearm competence certificate. Once you submit your firearm license application, you will have the following options:
– Section 15: License to possess a firearm for occasional sports shooting
– Section 16: License to possess a firearm for dedicated sports shooting
To qualify for a Section 16 license, applicants must:
– Be a member of a recognized sports shooting association
– Demonstrate dedicated participation in shooting activities over a specified period
